Is This Not Joseph’s Son?
When God started to speak to me I found it very difficult to accept that it was true. I remember that for 2 years I wondered if the voice I heard in my heart was actually God and not just me. In the Pentecostal church I attended there was no one that spoke openly about such things and so I was left to wonder about these supernatural occurrences on my own. Of course, I had read about mighty men of God in the scriptures that God spoke plainly with, but did my heavenly Father still speak like that today?
Are we to actually see ourselves spoken of in the Bible like Jesus did? Consider what is written in the book of Luke,
“And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?”
As I have pondered these verses, I have come to believe that before Jesus uttered the words, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears” He had counted the cost and accepted who He really was. The truth was that He was more than a carpenter’s son. I believe that, more than anyone else, Jesus understood the peril He would face by actually laying claim to be Israel’s Messiah. Nevertheless, the Son of God chose to proceed according the Holy Spirit anyway. In plainly stating what was absolutely true He risked everything. In the book of Luke we read,
“And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.”
This was the “church’s” response to Jesus’ first sermon. It is interesting to note that it was those of the synagogue, His brethren, that tried to throw the Son of God off a cliff and not the “unsaved”. Those of the house of God had wandered so far from the truth that they sought to kill Emanuel; the embodiment of that truth. Likewise there is coming a day when the sons of God will declare who they are too. As the body of Christ we will also find the Holy Spirit within us declaring that we are His chosen. We will have counted the cost and come to a place before God where we are willing to risk everything that His truth might be revealed, and, because the servant is not greater than His master we will meet with a similar response from those we call our brethren. We read in these passages that,
“But he passing through the midst of them went his way”
I believe this is a promise to all those who will dare to believe God and declare who they really are in Him. It is promised that Like Christ we shall receive divine protection from God if we will; when the Holy Spirit goads us, state plainly our mission and heritage. Lastly, we are destined to become Like Jesus for the scriptures state plainly,
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”
