Neither Married or Given in Marriage
It is written,
“Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, the children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:”
Many interpret these scriptures to mean that in heaven physical relationships between men and women will be done away with and we will be essentially neuter. Perhaps this notion stems from some who hold the concept that the intimate nature of mankind is somehow fundamentally sinful. However, I wish to present another possible interpretation of these verses for your consideration.
As I was praying about these scriptures the Lord spoke to my heart that Jesus said men and women are neither married nor given in marriage simply because in “that World” i.e. the New Heavens and New Earth the old order of earthly marriage no longer applies. It is the institution of marriage and not the act of marriage that is changed and made new.
The commandment to procreate is central to this creation. In fact, before mankind partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil the first commandment God gave to them was to be fruitful and multiply. This means that before everything was tainted by sin God’s original intention was for men and women to have children through physical union. God called His creation, and thus all that Adam and Eve were, very good and blessed them. Therefore, it is possible, that in the New Heavens and New Earth, when God restores all things, the commandment to be fruitful and multiply may remain in effect too.
In this creation we marry and are given in marriage according to what seems best to us. In some cultures we fall in love and wed as we please and in other cultures we are given away by our families into arranged marriages. Perhaps, Christ was simply saying to the Pharisees that in heaven their logical paradox did not apply because the customs of that new world are different than in this one.
This may seem to be a rather academic discussion for most of us but I assure you this has some very real consequences for us who are Spirit led. What most people do not yet realize is that the next creation, through the agency of the Holy Spirit, is beginning to overlap into this creation. That is, what is normal for the New Heavens and New Earth is starting to become normal for those who are called according to His purposes and filled with His Spirit in this Heavens and Earth.
As people allow God to completely overtake them and dominate their every thought and action they also taste of the powers of the world to come. In fact, people who are fully possessed of His Holy Spirit start to live as thought they were living in the new creation. Therefore, abilities and experiences which are common place in the world to come become possible in the here and now. The supernatural laws that exist in the New Heavens and New Earth begin to operate through us in this natural realm.
This is why the gifts of the Spirit, all of which are impossible according to the laws of physics, work here in this present age. The gifts of God are only functioning now because we have been given a small amount in advance of what we will receive in full when we are born again into the world to come. In that place, God’s eternal kingdom, His Holy Spirit pervades everything. In that place, by faith, nothing is impossible. The reason that Christians can do what is physically impossible in this world is because they are not bound by the physical laws of this universe any longer. We are literally becoming citizens of another world.
As Christians walk in the Spirit in this world we begin to live according to the foretaste of the supernatural laws of the next. Therefore, whereas it is impossible to walk on water in this world it is possible to do so in the next. Even though normal people cannot lay hands on a sick person and speak healing into their bodies it is just the way things are in the world to come. This is why Philip could be caught away after he finished baptizing the Ethiopian Eunuch. This is the reason why Jesus could walk through walls. Everything that is viewed as supernatural in this world is simply the natural order of things in the everlasting Kingdom of Heaven in the New Heavens and New Earth.
Since the time of the figs leaves mankind has never understood true intimacy and what it means to love each other as God intended. Eden and its perfection is a concept that our natural minds can no longer grasp. Divine love, as God intended it to be, faded from mankind’s memory and was essentially lost to us until the coming of His Son. It was only as the second Adam walked the Earth that at last we caught a glimpse of what true love was meant to be.
As people move into the final experience of Tabernacles they start to experience the first love of Eden once again. As we yield ourselves totally to His Spirit and begin to conform once again to His image we begin to live according to the social norms of another world. Here is a truth,
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
“In the New Heavens and New Earth people are neither married nor given in marriage because the love that is shed abroad in their hearts is greater than marriage.”
Earthly marriage will essentially be an old wine skin and will be replaced by something new that can contain the “joy unspeakable” that all will experience. I do not know and cannot fully understand what the expression of such love will be but I am fairly certain that we will still bring forth children according to the will of His Spirit. Physical intimacy will still take place but the rules that govern such affections will be reset to Eden’s first love. How this will actually play out is anyone’s guess but I think that the first century church started to step into this revelation as they held love feasts. The only thing we can say for certain is that the glorious liberty of the sons of God will be amazing and when our collective shame is removed we will be thrilled to live as God originally intended.
As Tabernacle Christians fully yield to the Holy Spirit in this creation the natural social conventions that have bound us will also fade and be replaced by Spirit led interactions. Earthly bonds will diminish as spiritual unions are formed. These social interactions may seem to break with the accepted conventions of this present age but they will be completely in line with the heavenly conventions of the world to come.
In conclusion, Spirit led liberty is the norm of the New Heavens and New Earth. We will again live by every world the proceeds out of the mouth of God and not judge according to our natural minds but simply, by faith, obey that which our Father says. As this new creation overlaps our lives in this present age we will see and do things that may, to the natural man, seem out of order, but will in fact be completely in line with the will of the Holy Spirit, i.e. the Spirit of our Father.
