Children Of The Supernatural

Merriam-Webster defines supernatural as,

“of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe; especially : of or relating to God or a god, demigod, spirit, or devil”

I believe that we, as Christians, must come to grips with the fact that we are children of the supernatural.  Our Father, who art in heaven, is supernatural in that He exists beyond the visible observable universe and operates in a realm that is not bound to the laws of our natural world.  God can, at will, cause the sun to stand still for a day, make people walk on water,  raise the dead, and do any other thing that He wants to do at any given moment He desires.  He is our Father, and we, through adoption, are His children.  It is written,

“If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”

John 14:14

In the Name of Jesus, God has given us a blank check

This is a blank check given to us by our Father to do the works that He does.  We are born from the Spirit and therefore we, like Jesus, are children of the Holy Spirit.  It is written,

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

  John 3:5,6

 Here is a truth,

“Adam was made a living soul by the breath of God, therefore, the supernatural is our origin.  Jesus was born through the will of the Spirit and therefore, in Him,  the supernatural is also our birthright.”

Our adversary, the Devil, tries to make us fear the supernatural.  We are taught to distrust anything that we cannot understand and view with suspicion anything we cannot explain.  Those who dishonor God have taken what He created and perverted it for use in ways that God never intended.  However, just because someone dishonors what is good does not make it evil.  If you had a piece of gold and if fell into the mud would you leave it there because it is dirty or would you pick up, wash it off, and keep it?

The natural world works by certain principles because that is how God created it to function.  The supernatural realm has a greatly expanded set of laws, as defined by the Holy Spirit, by which it functions too.  Whereas gravity dominates and controls this universe, Faith dominates and controls the world to come. This means, that anything which The Holy Spirit leads us to do is possible.

God says,

“But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.”

Galatians 5:18

Though this verse speaks about how the law of the Spirit supersedes the law of Moses it may also mean that we, who are led by the Spirit, are not under any law of this universe.  If you are not bound by the laws of nature you are by definition supernatural. We, like Jesus, are “born from above” meaning that our origin is not of this world but of the New Heavens and New Earth.  The truth is, if you can receive it, is that having a foretaste of our inheritance makes it possible to live now as if we were living there.

Just as natural laws apply to the save and unsaved, so do spiritual laws.  What works for one works for the other because spiritual laws, like natural laws, are universal.  Laws, natural or spiritual, are not inherently positive or negative but it is how you use them that determines their effect.  Spiritualists have figured out how to use what God made for good for purposes other than He intended.  Instead of submitting to the power and authority of God through Jesus, those who practice spiritualism yield themselves to demons and access the spiritual realm through fallen spirits like the witch of Endor did (1 Samuel 28:7).

God is the original supernatural

In our generation, the improper use of the supernatural is so sensationalized by Hollywood that people assume that the dark side is all there is to it.  Thus, when people see believers operating by the Holy Spirit they mistakenly associate the proper use of the supernatural power with evil spirits.  It is little wonder then that Christians, who are not accustomed to dealing with the supernatural, react to it with fear.  However, God says,

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and  of a sound mind.”

 2 Timothy 1:7

We do not need to fear the supernatural for we can trust God to lead and guides into all truth: even in this area.  When Jesus commissioned the disciples to go and preach the gospel, the good news of the kingdom of God, He expected them to go forth in the power of the Holy Spirit and perform supernatural works.  This includes laying hands on the sick and casting out demons.  Our Father expects His good news to be preached with power and demonstration.  The fact is, we are commanded to live and operate in the supernatural.

Here is a truth,

“It is impossible to become fully like Christ without living and operating in the supernatural as He did.”

It is a lie from hell that demons can come into Holy Spirit filled groups and into the lives of those who are walking in the spirit unnoticed. Light exposes darkness. When Jesus walked the Earth, demons could not stand to be around Him and would cry out saying,

“And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.”

Mark 3:12

Where the Spirit of the Lord dwells there is liberty… not fear.  To the degree that the Holy dwells in a place or in someone, darkness cannot co-exist very long.  Where the Spirit of God is demons cannot be silent.  Therefore, when we ask for the good gift of the Holy Spirit we need not fear being overtaken by the Devil or his demons because God gives us good gifts.

God never stopped moving supernaturally

In the Old Testament God constantly moved supernaturally in and through all of our most cherished Bible heroes.  David slew a lion with his bare hands when he was only a young man.  Joshua told the sun to stand still for a day so that he could defeat God’s enemies.  Daniel found safety in a den of ravenous lions.  Three Hebrew children walked in the midst of a fiery furnace heated seven times hotter than normal.   Jesus said,

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

John 14:17

Here is a truth,

“If the Holy Spirit did those types of miracles when He was merely with them what do you think He will do now that He is actually in us?”

During Christ’s time, many were so unfamiliar with the supernatural power of God  that when Jesus healed the sick they accused Him of doing so by the power of Beelzebub (Satan.)   The only spiritual powers the religious establishment knew of were those practiced by evil people and therefore they could not understand how someone claiming to be from God could perform supernatural acts like they pretended too.  However, it was not that Jesus was doing something that was of the Devil, it was just that they had lost touch with the Godly supernatural power that Jesus wielded.

The point of Luke chapter 11 is that when God’s children ask for good gifts He does not give them evil ones.  Those who preach unbelief emphasize that the Devil can come as an angel of light making others fear anything that appears out of the ordinary.  This type of hyper-caution is unwarranted and unhealthy because it causes everyone to doubt everything: literally sowing unbelief in the supernatural.  If you seek God with your whole heart and ask for His supernatural gifts, then expect that He will give you what is good because He is a loving Father.

Your Father is calling you to a deeper place in Him

When the Holy Spirit is speaking clearly to your heart, you do not fear those who live in fear of what God is doing.  If your Father is calling you to a deeper place than others have yet experienced, then dare to believe and be a trailblazer.  It may not be easy, it may not be perfectly clear which way to go, but you will be doing your best to allow God to lead you to where He is.  Be a leader who is led rather than a follower who is afraid to step out for fear of failure.

In conclusion, embrace the supernatural because we are children of the supernatural.  Do not fear your inheritance because, if everything goes according to plan, the supernatural is where we all will dwell with our Father for eternity.  Amen.

A Man With A Stick

Small Beginnings

One day, a novice shepherd decided that he needed a staff. After all, all shepherds need staffs. Having little money, he went to a stand of almond trees and selected a young sapling that looked straight and strong. Cutting it down, he fashioned it into a rod about 6 feet long. Finishing, he thought to himself, “this will be a really good walking stick.”

Over the years, as he learned the shepherd biz, our friend used his staff for many things. It helped him walk, when tired he leaned on it, and when his sheep were in danger he used it for protection. Moses came to rely on his staff and it went everywhere with him.

You never know what you might see

A Man With A Stick

As he leaned on his stick one day, remembering when he first cut it from a stand of young almond trees, he looked up at the mountain before him and saw a curious sight. A bush burned with a bright fire but did not seem harmed by the flame. Taking his stick, our friend struggled up the mountain until he stood before that burning bush.

We all know the tale of Moses and the burning bush. It is one of the most well-known stories in the Bible. A man meets God face to face and is never the same afterwards. Isn’t it odd, though, that God told Moses to loose his shoes but allowed him to bring his stick onto holy ground? Was being in the presence of God what made that stick special?

God sees what we will be, not just what we are

Perhaps God foresaw that stick, cut from such humble beginnings, would someday consume two serpents of the magicians of Pharaoh’s court. Maybe God foresaw how that rod would turn the entire Nile to blood. Held up over the red sea, God foreordained that shepherd’s staff would not only part the waters before it, but save an entire nation from certain death. In the hands of Moses, that almond rod would strike solid stone causing fresh water to flow from it. Whereas, that rod seemed to be only a simple stick, YHWH saw a shaft that would blossom even though it was old and dry. Finally, our Lord knew it would aid Moses, many years in the future, to climb the mountain where He would take him home.

The day that particular seed fell onto the ground, no one knew what it would become…but God did. When it grew among all the other almond saplings it did not know what its future held…but God knew. The day it was cut down perhaps it thought its life was over, but in God’s eyes its journey was just beginning. Indeed, for many years it was simply a common walking stick, never imagining the power of God that would flow through it someday.

Be the stick of God

You are like that stick. Humble in origin but destined to be mighty in God. Like that almond sapling, you might think that your life is over because of what has happened to you. However, just as you feel finished, the best is yet before you.  In reality God singles you out for His purposes, because He has plans for you.  God’s plans include living an amazing and full life in His hands. The truth is that your future holds a greater destiny than you could possibly imagine. You, because of your age, may feel like an old dried out piece of wood, but in the hands of the Almighty you will blossom once again.

In conclusion, do not despise yourself because you are merely a stick. We are all just sticks. Know this, though, even a stick, when lifted by Jesus (the greater Moses) becomes the staff of God. Just realize that even the most common person can, in the right hands, accomplish miracles and do mighty wonders. Be the stick that goes wherever God goes and you will see great things done through you too.
