All the Kingdoms of the World: Are They Worth It?

Temptation

God says,

“Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.”

Matthew 4:8,9

Offering someone all the kingdoms of the world seems generous, but the Devil never gives more than he seeks to get. Through accepting something relatively worthless; our adversary often cheats us out of what is truly valuable. Offering Christ the kingdoms of the world only demonstrates that what the Devil hoped to gain is even more precious. The question that we must ask ourselves is, “What could possibly be more valuable than all the kingdoms of the world?”

Sin is disobedience to our Father’s will

What the devil sought to gain from Christ was the same thing he received from Adam and Eve: disobedience. If Satan convinced Christ to take the path that seemed good to his natural mind, disobedience would cause him to sin. Satan knows the wages of sin is death.  After all, if Christ sought to fulfill God’s plan in a way that our Father did not approve of, would He still have risen the third day?

Jesus, born to become the sacrifice for the sins the world, learned obedience through the way of the cross. To the natural man, the way of the cross seems futile and unsure. To a natural man what the devil offers seems a reasonable alternative for what God wants. After all, if you are the head of all the kingdoms of the world you can simply usher in the kingdom of heaven through decree.

Go Away Satan!

Fortunately, Jesus was not naturally minded and said,

“Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.”

Matthew 4:10

These scriptures demonstrate that worshiping God carries with it the idea of service. Therefore,  the one you serve is the one you worship.

Some try to make up for their rebellion by doing what “they” think is good. It is like saying to God, “I won’t do what you want, but I will do what I feel is just as good”.  God rejected Cain’s sacrifice for that same type of reasoning.  God desired a blood sacrifice to point to the future lamb of God. When Cain did what seemed right in his own eyes God would not respect his offering.  Offering what seems good to us is still the main reason that our sacrifices are not regarded by our Father today.

Never bargain with the Devil

Here is a truth,

“The Devil never gives more than he seeks to get”

Lured by easy success, some deceive themselves into believing they’re doing God’s will while ignoring His greater calling. Through allowing us to succeed in unimportant areas, the father of lies distracts us from God’s perfect will. Our adversary often steps back from the small battles, knowing he still wins the war. Through giving up a little ground in the present, Satan prevents a much greater loss in the future. Likewise, though offering Christ the kingdoms of the world seemed generous, it couldn’t compare to what God had in store for His son.  In the same way, even if we prosper in our disobedience, it pales in comparison to what God plans for us to accomplish.

God does not take back what He gives

It is written,

“For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.”

Romans 11:29

At Gilgal, Saul disobeyed God’s commandment.  Therefore, God gave Saul’s kingdom to another even though nothing outwardly changed that day.  Disobeying God does not mean that the gifts and callings we receive suddenly vanish. Delayed judgement, leads some to believe that, because their ministry still functions, everything is OK. What they do not realize is that God still honors the office even when they are rejected personally.

There is no true worship without true obedience.  Faithful servants must fully embraces their Father’s will.

Here is a true saying,

“Doing good in our disobedience does not cause God to accept our rebellion.”

As it is written,

“And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”

1 Samuel 15:22

And moreover,

“Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.”

1 Samuel 15:10,11

To obey is better than sacrifice

The prophet Samuel told Saul to destroy king Agag and everything the king owned.  Instead, Saul took the king captive and saved the best of his animals.  Making excuses why he chose to disobey the God’s command, Saul protested.  Surely, Saul reasoned, sacrifices are as good as or even better than destroying everything as God instructed. The short answer to that line of thought is, “no, it isn’t.” God, as a judgement, took the kingdom from Saul because of his disobedience. God demonstrated his displeasure by having His prophet violently hack king Agag to pieces as Saul should have done. This lesson is: never substitute what we believe is good for simple obedience to the voice of God.

Pursuing our own path, doing what seems reasonable to us, we miss God’s path.  Consequently, every minute we are going our own way we not going His way.

Suspiciously easy? Then beware

Be suspicious if you suddenly feel no resistance from the enemy in areas where you usually find opposition.  Sometimes. the door which looks easy according to “the knowledge of good,” leads away from God’s will. However good the kingdoms of this world looked the cross was still the only way for Christ to accomplish the plan of God.

What signs of leaving God’s path are there? After all, being deceived means that we are caught in a lie. The truth is, God tells us when we stray. God expresses His displeasure through scripture, conviction, people, and circumstance. Therefore, if God goads and pricks your heart, even in your deception, He is calling you back to Him. The Holy Spirit speaks to us no matter how much we ignore Him. God never ceases in His efforts to woo us back to the path that leads to eternal life. It is this still small voice that anchors us in times of confusion. Listen to God’s voice, trust Him more than what others tell you. Trust the Holy Spirit more than even your own mind.

Straight is the path and narrow is the gate

God sets before each one of us only one path to follow.  Our individual paths are marked out from the foundations of this world.  This means you have a destiny if you will obey God and fulfill it.  Our self-willed detours waste time, delay God’s plan, causing us and others to suffer earthly and eternal loss. On one hand, the gifts of the Devil pale in comparison to the cost of our disobedience. On the other hand, sacrifices made in doing God’s will are not worthy to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us.

All the kingdoms of this world are not worth it

In conclusion, Christ could have gained the whole world and lost everything that God wanted to give Him.  Jesus could have traded a heavenly kingdom for the kingdoms of this world and ultimately ended up with nothing.  Thank God and him that he chose the cross.

Doing evil that good may come of it is compromise.  Building our own kingdom is to deny God’s kingdom.  It is doing the will of our Father that grants us entry into His eternal kingdom. Anything else Satan offers, no matter how good it seems on Earth, is worthless.

How can I apply this teaching to my life?

Ask yourself, “Am I doing what God wants me to do? Or, am I doing something that I think is just as good?” David Wilkerson had great success in the eyes of man with Teen Challenge. However, David felt that he had left his true calling. David felt called back to the streets. Have you left your first calling? Are you doing something else than what God called you to do? A Glass Darkly: Do We Have All God’s Revelation?

A Glass Darkly

Do we or don’t we have the complete revelation of God?

Depending on how you answer this question says a lot about your theological viewpoint.  If you believe the Bible is complete then it is only a matter of fitting the pieces together properly. If you believe that the Bible is not complete you are open to God revealing more of His plan for mankind.  In essence, those who believe the scriptures are incomplete are open to further revelation, while those who believe the scriptures are complete are not.  I submit to you, though, that Paul states we look through a glass darkly because we do not yet have the complete revelation of God.

The scriptures are not complete

At the end of the first century A.D., most Christians believe the apostles completed the Bible. It is my contention that this doctrine is incorrect. I propose that our Father did not stop speaking when the apostle John lay down His quill.  The fact that no known writings have since risen to the level of scripture does not preclude God from authoring more holy writ.  This is a crucial point to ponder; for in order to receive new revelation it is necessary to believe it is possible.

I have yet many things to say

Jesus said.

“I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”

John 16:12,13.

At the time Jesus said these words the revelation that He wished to give to His disciples was incomplete.  Jesus said that when the Spirit of Truth came He would lead and guide His disciples into all truth.  Therefore, the Holy Spirit both leads us into new truth and shows us, through revelation, things that will come to pass.

We see through a glass darkly

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

1 Corinthians 13:12,

The apostle Paul admits, that at present, we look through a glass darkly and only have partial revelation.  Paul prophesies that there will come a time when we do see clearly and all shall be revealed. God declares a day will come when we shall stand face to face with Him as Moses did.

“…the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.”

Exodus 33:11

Presently, our knowledge of God is partial because we do look through a glass darkly. Therefore, we must admit that, because we lack clarity, our knowledge of God only approximates the truth.

New Testament inspiration differs from the Old Testament

A critical understanding of the Bible is that the New Testament epistles of the apostles are not inspired in the same way the Old Testament is. In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit, when He spoke, simply “fell” upon individuals and possessed them.

“…when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”

                   1 Samuel 10:10,11

Whereas in the New Testament epistles we see that the spirits prophesy by permission.

“And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.”

                                                                                                 Corinthians 14:32

The New Testament also differs from the Old Testament in the degree that it is God breathed.   Scripture declares that the entire Old Testament is inspired,

“…that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

                                                             1 Timothy 315-17

The writings that Paul refers to as “the holy scriptures” are the Old Testament writings and I do believe that they are 100% God breathed.   However, in the New Testament Paul states such things as,

“Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.”

 1 Corinthians 7:25

Asking someone to pick up your cloak is not inspired scripture

We must admit that the apostle Paul really meant that he was only giving us his best judgment on the issue.

And again we read,

“The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.”

 2 Timothy 4:13

Paul means that he just wants them to bring some things he forgot at Troas.  There is really nothing more God breathed about this passage than that.  We must believe Paul when he makes a distinction between the “commandment of the Lord” and “my judgment”.  Moreover, we should not give both types of scripture the same divine weight because he obviously did not.

Our faith and confidence rests upon God

To many, it is unnerving, to consider that the New Testament is not absolutely inspired.  It is uncomfortable to think that we look through a glass darkly.  However, we understand that because the Holy Spirit now dwells within us  we’re a partnership. Now days, we yield to the Spirit of our Father “by choice.”  God no longer forcefully falls upon us as in times past.  As the penmen of the New Testament did not write the scripture by force but merely yielded to the Holy Spirit. Mostly they did it perfectly, but sometimes their humanity and/or imperfection shines through.

Our faith and confidence in God rests not upon how perfect the scriptures are but upon our personal relationship with Him. The New Testament is a remarkable document that is 99.9% accurate to the original texts.   It really does not matter, though, if the New Testament is 100% accurate because we still look through a glass darkly anyway. In truth, the New Testament is a springboard to know our Father through personal experience.  It is written,

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”

John 16:13

The Spirit of Truth

Scripture demonstrates the revelation which God intends to give His people is not complete.  The Holy Spirit continued to speak even with the completion of the book of Revelation. God is not against further writing.  God is just against altering what has already written. Men who walked with Jesus wrote down, through inspiration, the words he said and their experience with Him.  As we mature in Jesus revelation will flow through us in a similar manner.

Until the perfect comes, we continue to know in part and prophesy in part because we yield to God in part.  We see through a glass darkly and find our way through listening, hearing, and obeying God’s voice.  Paul says,

“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

2 Corinthians 3:18

Finally, we seek to have the mindset of Paul,

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded…”

 Philippians 3:13-15

How can I apply this teaching to my life?

Challenging deeply held religious beliefs causes some to fear. An incomplete Bible is a notion that many do not dare even consider because of strongly held dogma.  Of a truth, there are many false gospels such as the Catholic Apocrypha or the Book of Mormon. The fact that error exists, though, does not preclude further truth.

Moreover, all truths that claim to be new must integrate seamlessly with both the Old and New Testaments. Further revelation will always exhibit a commensurate level of inspiration as previous, established scripture.  The Holy Spirit does not author confusion, therefore, anything He writes will agree with what He has already written.

Be open to the voice of God

Dare to consider that God may have further revelation to share and be open-minded to that possibility.  Old Testament saints looked through a glass darkly until Jesus came. Paul says that the New Testament Saints still look through a glass darkly too. While nothing that has been written currently rises to the level of biblical inspiration;it may happen.  If it does, do not reject it “out of hand” but prove all things, holding fast that which is good.
