Special Operations for God

special operations

Behind Enemy Lines

I often times feel like I am a member of a special spiritual unit in the army of God much akin to a Special Operations unit in the U.S. military.  Small bands of highly trained and motivated men and women who are flown in and dropped, often times behind enemy lines, to carry out very dangerous, but extremely necessary, missions.

Why do the military use special operations units?  One reason is that conventional military forces are not able to achieve the desired mission objective. Also, special operation units are more mobile and able to be deployed quicker than conventional forces when a situation demands immediate action. Lastly, special operations forces are used when the assignment must remain a secret, either from the enemy or even from the public at large, due to its sensitive nature of their mission.

Special operations for God

God often has situations that demand spiritual special operations units.  These missions are vitally necessary, but those of the conventional church are either not equipped to carry out His objectives or are unwilling to do so.  Time and time again I have found myself in the middle of foreign spiritual war zones, seemingly behind enemy lines, carrying out the most outlandish missions for His Holy Spirit. These types of missions do not fit within the normal Christian church’s idea of what is proper and acceptable, but nevertheless these missions are vital to Gods kingdom.

Sometimes, God’s missions require the utmost discretion

It is exciting work, but at the same time, just like the real world special operations units, you are not at liberty to talk about your missions.  You may ask, why the secrecy?  To which God answers, “Because of the delicate nature of the mission and how it would be misunderstood if it became known”.

David is a good example of this type of spiritual secret mission.  In 1 Samuel we read:

“But David thought to himself, “One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”

And,

“David lived in Philistine territory a year and four months.”

   1 Samuel 27:1,7

What was David thinking?

What was David thinking?  Were not the Philistines the sworn enemies of God?  Did they not serve idols?  It seemed as though David was violating everything that the Israelites believed by going to be with the uncircumcised, but God had a plan.

Again, in 1 Samuel we read,

“Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites and the Amalekites. (From ancient times these peoples had lived in the land extending to Shur and Egypt.) Whenever David attacked an area, he did not leave a man or woman alive, but took sheep and cattle, donkeys and camels, and clothes. Then he returned to Achish.

When Achish asked, “Where did you go raiding today?” David would say, “Against the Negev of Judah” or “Against the Negev of Jerahmeel” or “Against the Negev of the Kenites.” He did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, for he thought, “They might inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.’ “And such was his practice as long as he lived in Philistine territory. Achish trusted David and said to himself, “He has become so odious to his people, the Israelites, that he will be my servant forever.”

Samuel 27:8-11

YHWH’s secret warriors

While behind enemy lines and with great deception David continued to fight the philistines’ right under their very noses.  To all outward appearances David had become a traitor to Israel and was serving the enemy, but in reality David still served God and carried out His judgment upon His enemies.

Many times this how the spiritual special operations of God functions. You are doing His will according to His purposes, but to those of the conventional church you might appear to be fraternizing with the enemy.  While your brothers and sisters may judge you as unrighteous it is only because they do not understand the nature of your mission and the vital necessity that you carry it out as He commands.

Improvise, overcome, adapt

Much of the church today is so mired in tradition and theological dogma that is it unresponsive or slow to move when God speaks.  Therefore, if something must change quickly, only special opts can do what is necessary within the time frame it must take place.  This is why He calls men and women of faith (experts in listening, hearing, and obeying His voice on time) to wage these unconventional spiritual campaigns.

Spiritual special agents are normally the first to be deployed in a new move of Gods Holy Spirit.  They are literally sent in behind demonic enemy lines, right under their noses, to do the necessary preparation for the coming move of God.  These men and women of faith will literally go anywhere and do anything to accomplish the missions they are assigned.

Paul says,

“And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barrack, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.  Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.”

Hebrew 11:32-38

Become a hero of our faith

These are the heroes of our faith; those who dared to believe God when all else in their natural minds and world said different.  Men and woman of God did mighty exploits simply because they acted by faith and would not quit in the face of overwhelming odds and certain death.

Those heroes are still being formed today and are carrying out mighty exploits, but as the spiritual special opts of this generation you will hardly ever hear what they do, except in whispered stories that even if  told, you could hardly believe.

The few, the chosen, the godly

Are you special operations for God material?  Do you believe you have what it takes to do by faith that which is impossible?  Are you willing to put your spiritual life on the line to make a difference in the kingdom of God?  If you are willing to sell all and follow Him, God will find you, knock one day on the door of your heart and say, “Come join the few, the humble, the Godly.”  Perhaps someday you to will take your place among the heroes of old who loved not their lives unto the death that some might be saved.

Hoorah!

Set Jesus Free Part Two

set jesus free

He Whom The Son Sets Free Is Free Indeed

We all desire to follow Jesus and make Him proud of what we do for Him. After all, Christ has given us eternal life, unconditional love, and a sense of purpose. God is good: always.

Today, I want to talk with you about what we must do in order to free Jesus so that He can live His life through us.

Paul says,

“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”

1 Corinthians 13:11

Paul tells us there is a “process of maturing” we can look forward to. Our spiritual childhood is temporary and our understanding of God grows as we become spiritual adults.

Consider, for instance, when a child desires to cross a busy intersection. If done correctly, when the light is red, there is little danger. However, if the child crosses when the conditions are not right the risk of disaster increases significantly. A child’s safety depends upon their ability to correctly interpret what the signals are saying.

Our walk through this life is like a busy intersection. To safely reach our destination, we must trust the one who designed the signs and signals. If we trust the information God provides, we can even walk through the valley of the shadow of death and fear no evil.

God says,

“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.”

Isaiah 28:10,11

John writes,

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

John 14:17

God has given us His Holy Spirit to dwell within each one of us who asks.

Jesus promises,

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?”

Luke 11:13

God gives his Holy Spirit for the express purpose of leading us through the busy intersection of life. He is called “the Spirit of truth” because God never steers us wrong. He is an inner light that directs us through even the most dangerous of situations if we will but trust and obey His voice.

We lack the necessary perspective

One reason it is dangerous for a child to cross a busy intersection is due to the fact that their field of vision is limited. Being small, children cannot see far enough ahead to know whether or not a speeding vehicle will come upon them suddenly. As Christians, our field of view (our natural minds) is also limited and we cannot see all that is necessary to navigate the world we live in. However, God, who is all-knowing, gives us the necessary knowledge if we are willing to hear.

Often, the “sticking point”, is when the Holy Spirit’s voice conflicts with our natural understanding. We, as it were, look both ways, up and down the street of this world, trying to determine if the way forward is clear. However, just as we decide to step out the Holy Spirit says, “don’t go!”  Our natural mind argues with the Holy Spirit thinking we know better than Him.  Unfortunately, we often ignore the voice of God and suffer the consequences.

Don’t marry him

For example, a woman testified that on her wedding day, guests had arrived and everything was set for her to walk down the aisle when the Holy Spirit said, “Don’t marry him.” She argued with God all the way to the altar and said, “I do” anyway when God said, “do not”. After all, how could she disappoint everyone? Later, after years of physical abuse and a bitter divorce, she admitted that she had disobeyed the voice of God and that He was right all along. God was not being cruel by telling her to break off the wedding but was simply trying to spare her years of misery through His divine wisdom and foresight. He was aware of the oncoming problem when her field of view was too limited to see the danger.

God is not a doctrine

Many times our doctrines and principles also hinder us from obeying God’s voice. At times we forget that God is sovereign and that He is the one who “wrote the book”. We sometimes toss aside His advice because it does not fit with what we know. Here is a truth:

“Principles, while being good for general guidelines in the absence of direct communication from above, should never prevent us from hearing and obeying God’s voice.”

For example, I was in church one evening after service sitting in a pew. A lady I did not know came and stood beside me. I felt an overpowering desire to hug her and decided to obey. She was standing and I put my arm around her waist and just held her near me for about fifteen minutes. We said nothing but just listened to the after-service music. I felt to let go and we went our separate ways without speaking a word.

The principles, which amount to the traditions of man, are killing us

Normally, such close physical contact with the opposite sex is not permitted in most churches because the “principles” tell us it is unseemly and inappropriate. It is possible that people who looked at us may have judged our actions as unspiritual. Even I did not know why I did what I did; I simply yielded to God and trusted what He was telling me to do.

About a week later the same woman came up to me with tears in her eyes and said, “Do you remember me? That night at the church I felt that God did not love me and I had decided to go to the waterfront dock, wrap a sheet around myself, jump into the water, and drown myself”. She continued, “But when you held me close, I felt the love of God and it was if He was holding me and I knew He loved me.”

Set Jesus free to touch those around you

On that night God did what was necessary to touch that woman’s life even though it confounded my natural mind. I could have obeyed the principles, ignored the voice of God, and no one would have blamed me: except Jesus. Maybe, I was the only one in that church on that night who would yield to the Holy Spirit so that He could personally touch her aching heart and show her that He really did care. What was just a “hug to me” may, through the Holy Spirit, literally have been “life” to her.

Set Jesus free to do whatever He wishes to do in our lives. Let Christ again walk the earth and heal the broken-hearted through us. Let us throw off the chains of our natural understanding and give Him free rein in our lives so that He can reconcile the world to God our Father. Give Him permission to do whatever He wants, whenever He wants, and to whomsoever He wishes so that some might be saved. This is the task set before us as true servants of God.

If God doesn’t care what others think, why should you?

Don’t fear what others think, be the hand of God in the lives of those around you. We are responsible for eternal souls and our actions have eternal consequences. Let us allow God to break open our earthen vessels and show forth the treasure that lies within.

I tell you a truth:

“We must be willing to move from where we are to where God is in order to eat spiritual manna, be shielded from the fiery trials of life by day, and have our darkness spiritually illuminated by His light. To see the miraculous provision in our lives we must set Jesus free by following God’s voice.”

Just as it was vital for Israel to be in the presence of God in order to survive the natural wilderness of Sin, we also must continually dwell in His presence to survive spiritually. For Israel, this meant that when the pillar of fire and smoke rose up and traveled off over the horizon that they needed to break camp quickly and journey with Him. Likewise, if we desire to see the provision of God in our lives and experience His spiritual power we must keep up with Him too.

If God is not where you are at, change your position

Presently, God is far ahead of us, while we are perishing in the desert because we have fallen behind. Many of us attend churches that are mere monuments to past movements of God. Though these denominations were once where God was, they are not where God is now. Furthermore, these past testaments to God’s presence do not seek to change their position. If we stay where God is not present we will not prosper any more than they will. We will have a form of Godliness but will lack the power thereof.

Where God is presently in our age, is at the very limits of what we would consider “Christianity”. He is doing new things and these new things do not look like anything we now know. It is as if we are like Simeon looking at Christ as a baby.

Finally, Luke says,

“And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.”

Luke 2:25-32

I tell you a truth:

“A great move of the Holy Spirit is already here if we have eyes and ears to know it.”

Please pray with me now,

“Father, give us ears to hear and hearts to understand what your Spirit is saying to your sons and daughters. I pray that, through your grace, you will give us wisdom from above to know the time of our visitation.  Help us set Jesus free in our hearts and in our lives.  Forgive us our sins and trespasses causing us to grow white-hot in our fervor to serve you without reservation. I pray you open up the heavens to teach us the meaning of our responsibility to obey your voice. Bring us to where you are that we might dwell in your presence forever. Amen.”
