Remember Who Gave You Life

God says,

” Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. “

Exodus 20:12

Today, I want to talk with you about a terrible injustice. This injustice is, in my opinion, one of the worst injustices that is being committed by saved and unsaved alike. This injustice is:

Failure to honor your father and mother in their time of need is a grave sin

The lack of respect that young people show their parents these days is nothing short of shameful. Whereas in eastern cultures people revere and appreciate older people, many of our generation feel no such fealty.

God says,

“There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.  There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.”

Proverbs 30:11,12

Though many parents are imperfect in their children’s eyes, still they warrant respect because they gave life to them. Moreover, they raised them throughout their formative years and loved them through every difficulty. To dishonor either parent, is in my estimation a grave sin.

Moreover, some children even curse their own parents. When they feel they are out of line, they speak ill and invoke satan upon them. Thinking themselves righteous in their own eyes, they speak against the actions of their mother or father before men. In their tender years, before they have known very much of life, they decry what they cannot yet fully understand. Having little to no experience in real situations of the heart, they judge what they cannot possibly yet understand, as if they are qualified to do so.

Moreover, Jesus says,

“For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:  But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.  And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;”

Mark 7:10-12

In this passage, we see children using supposed scripture to manipulate a situation to their advantage. Instead of blessing their mother and father, they use a supposed “loop hole” to avoid their God-given responsibility to care for them.

Likewise, some children hide behind scripture when they don’t like the decisions that their parents make. Suddenly, no matter what sin is in their lives, they become qualified to speak against their father and mother who bore them. Blind leaders of the blind, they suppose that their perspective on God’s word supersedes any natural or spiritual obligation to honor the people who raised them.

Shakespeare wrote,

“How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child.”

In conclusion,

When parents fight, children get caught in the middle. It is an unfortunate reality of life that we often feel like we have to choose sides. However, it is important to realize that you are the children and they are your parents; therefore, you should respect and love them both even in their difficulty. They raised you through everything you went through, therefore, shouldn’t you stand with them in their hour of need?
