Abraham And His Wives: The “Rest” Of The Story

Abraham

God says,

“And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:”

Romans 4:11

Abraham was not only the natural father of the of Israel, but through his faith he became the father of all those who believe.  Therefore, no matter what our origin, natural or spiritual, if we have faith in God, we are the seed of Abraham.

Here is a truth,

“Abraham was a man approved of by God”

Abraham,  perfect in his generation became the father of a holy nation.  Our lord would do nothing except He told the father of nations.  God’s friend even brought forth the promised son, Isaac, in whom all the nations are blessed.

What I want to speak about today is how we often assume we know a man of God but do not realize the full story of who He really is. Sometimes we “read” into a person’s life only the parts that make sense to us and forget about or ignore the rest.  However, here is the “rest” of the story about Abraham.

To begin with, Abraham married his half-sister.

“And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.”

Genesis 20:12

Yes, the father of our faith married the daughter of one of his fathers wives.  Evidently, the gene pool was not degraded to a point where God felt he had to prohibit such marriages (Leviticus 18:9)

Next,  we all know the story of Sara and Hagar.  Sara could not initially bear children and so, according to the custom of the day, gave Abraham Hagar (Sara’s handmaiden) to bear a child for her husband.

Abraham’s third wife

What many do not know is that, after Sara passed away, Abraham married yet another lady named Keturah. God says,

“Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.  And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.”

Genesis 25:1,2

Therefore, besides Ishmael and Isaac Abraham had 6 more children.

But wait, there’s more.

“But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.”

Genesis 25:6

Therefore, there we at least two more children from at least two concubines bringing the total of Abraham’s offspring to ten or more. I have often wondered if the descendants of Abraham’s concubines were in fact the origin of three kings that brought gifts to the newborn Christ.

Here is a truth,

“When we read scripture, unless we pay close attention, opening our hearts and minds to what God is really saying, we tend to see only what we want to see.”

Abraham, the father of our faith, in reality had at least 5 wives during his lifetime and many of them concurrently.  This part of Abraham’s life is never examined carefully because it does not fit our preconceived notions of holiness.

Doubtless, should Abraham came to our churches today we would shun him as a sinner.  Yet, when we hypocritically pick and choose what we like and ignore the “whole” man we do err.

We have many preconceptions about the scriptures

This is even true of Jesus.  If you look at movies about his life (with the possible exception of “The Passion” by Mel Gibson) the portray Jesus as a blue eye man with a British accent.  Sometimes Jesus appears to be Catholic and other times appears to be non-denominational.  We create God in our own image rather than understand who and what He really is.

It is very important to humble ourselves and get to know God in actuality and not just in theory.  We must come to terms with who He is and not just who we want Him to be. The Holy Spirit pierces our ethnocentric ideas.  Therefore align yourselves with God rather than forcing Him to align with us. Here is an uncomfortable truth,

“Abraham had many wives, some at the same timr, plain and simple.  Abraham married his half-sister.  Yet, as much as these things may offend our present day sensibilities Abraham was a friend of God and the father of our faith.“

God says,

“And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.”

James 2:23

Will we accept what God does in the way that God does it? Or will we reject God and try to explain away the parts that don’t make sense to our natural minds?  Should we only preach and teach only the portions of the scriptures that do not offend religious and social norms? Or will we dare to tell the truth not matter how unpopular it may be?

Furthermore, God says,

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;”

2 Timothy 4:3

What exactly is sound doctrine?  It is merely what your particular church teaches or is it something more? In its most elemental form sound doctrine is simply a correct understanding of God’s word as taught by His Spirit.  Here is a truth,

“A great deal of what is thought to be “sound doctrine” is simply man’s reasoning sprinkled with a liberal portion of natural minded thinking topped off by fear of what other people may say.”

We are currently living in a time when people do not accept sound doctrine. However, sound doctrine is not the dogma that the church.  Sound doctrine is the revelation that “ministers” fear to speak to this generation. The sad fact is that many will not preach and teach the whole truth of God.  Worse yet, many call what is actually of God, heresy.

The whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God

In conclusion, have a the guts to preach the truth or have the decency to step away from the pulpit. Do not fool yourself that the people cannot “handle” the truth”.  Don’t deceive yourself into believing that you’re keeping back the whole word of God for their sakes. Put down the Bible and remain silent if you’re not willing to declare God as He truly is.  I you will not risk everything, nothing of any value will be done.  Counting Abraham as the father in the faith, let’s own him in every detail.  Let us champion the real father of our faith instead of a sanitized caricature of someone we find more acceptable.

The Rhema

The Rhema

Standing Under The Waterfall Of God’s Revelation

One of the chief benefits of “connecting” with the body of Christ is the explosion of revelation that happens when spirits and hearts unite.  God never meant to us live alone, but rather God designed us to flow together as one by His Spirit.

As I spoke with a prophetess, who is a connection in the spirit, my spirit and mind came to understand something that God is speaking to this generation. This is a major understanding that God is beginning to bring to His church and I am excited to share part of it with you.

God speaks today!

Many talk about the phenomena of the “Rhema” as it pertains to the spoken word of God. People say that “God speaks today” just as He did many centuries ago. However, many make a difference between the two, attributing more authority and weight to written scripture than to what God speaks today.  They think that somehow the Rhema is less important and less reliable than the Bible.  However, here is a truth,

“It was God’s Rhema that Adam and Eve heard in the Garden of Eden.  YHWH gave his written word only after mankind refused to hear God’s His voice at mount Horeb.”

Just as God gave the children of Israel a king when they refused Samuel as their judge, God wrote down the scriptures when Israel refused to hear His voice.

God says,

“And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.  And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.”

Exodus 19:18-19

Moreover,

“And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.  And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”

Exodus 20: 18:19

Furthermore,

“And Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the Lord hath said will we do. And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Exodus: 24:3,4

In the beginning was the Rhema

Up until this time men and women of God had lived and served God by hearing the Rhema.  The scriptures that were penned by Moses were not an elevated form of communication from God but a compromise made because of His people’s fear and unbelief.  Whereas God wanted to speak His word directly to His people, His people wanted to draw back and read his word away from His presence. Rather than accepting God’s voice, they had grown so far from Him that they feared His revelation. This has been the way that most believers have come to know God ever since.

Jesus is the Rhema of God made flesh

God is in the process of restoring all things, bringing us back to the garden by faith in His pattern son, Jesus Christ.  Just as Christ (the second Adam) lived by revelation, we must live by revelation.  God is teaching us to once again trust and live by every word that proceeds out of His mouth.

The Rhema, my friends, is the only type of revelation mankind was ever meant to have. Direct communication with God was to be the pattern for knowing our Father and anything else that He thought relevant to our lives. In fact, the truth is, that relative to the Bible, the Rhema is an ocean and the scriptures are but one small island in that vast sea.

God’s Rhema is sufficient

Those who followed God lived by the revelation up until the time that Moses brought the Children of Israel out of Egypt.  Enoch, who walked with God and was not, lived by the Rhema.  Noah, perfect in his generation, lived by God’s voice.  Job, perfect in his generation, lived by the Rhema.  Abraham, the father of our faith and a friend of God, lived by the Rhema.  Moses, the giver of the law, lived by and wrote the first five books of the law by the Rhema.  Here is a truth,

“All revelation is derived through the Rhema.”

The Rhema is where we started out and the Rhema is where we will end up. Being Spirit led by the voice of God is living by that revelation. God’s Rhema does not violate His scriptures because the scriptures are given to us by His revelation.

The Sermon on the Mount is pure Rhema

Jesus spoke by such revelation just as Moses did.  When Jesus uttered the sermon on the mount it was by revelation and it only became scripture because God anointed the apostles to write the four gospels. The reason that Jesus added to the scripture is that he was receiving revelation through the Logos.   Here is another truth,

“Scripture is but a small subset of the Rhema.  There is much more to God’s revelation than scripture to be had if we will only allow God to speak to us and through us.”

The revelation that Jesus had from a young boy was the Rhema.  Here is a truth,

“The Rhema is the expression of the Logos.”

The Rhema, which flows from the Logos, is the word that was with God in the beginning.  It is the word that became flesh and made Jesus Christ what He was.  And now, if you can receive it, those who walk in the Spirit are the Rhema of God.

We are living in a Present Testament

Live by what proceeds out of the mouth of God, not just by the little that’s written down.  YHWH’s Rhema, the genesis of the scriptures, will not violate the scriptures.  However, God’s revelation will almost certainly violate man’s dogma.

In conclusion, return to a life of the Rhema.  Live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of our Lord today.  Revelation is our birthright, thus each and every one us can and should hear God’s Rhema.  God speaks the Rhema in such a profound way that the deaf hear it, the blind see it, and the lame carry it to all the world.
