God Near us

Sometimes Life Shatters Us

I used to participate in a witnessing team when I was in Bible College. Each week we would meet at a brother’s house living just outside of the University of Washington.  After a short prayer, each of us witnessed and shared the gospel with those on campus.

I must admit, I wasn’t very good at witnessing. I felt uneasy approaching people cold like that but knew that Jesus wanted me to try. Students at liberal universities are oftentimes so wrapped up in their studies they have little time for spiritual matters.

Witnessing her agony

One day as I walked around campus, I stood outside a large building with beautiful stonework, next to a small park. I just stood there for quite a while not knowing why. Presently, a young woman burst through the doors to my left and ran into the park; collapsing under a small tree to my right. She cried and sobbed shouting “Why God, why God…” Her agony was terrible to watch and hear. I had not heard someone cry out to God like that since I was eight years old and my mother’s father died in her arms while our family was on a camping trip.

I felt compassion well up within me and I sat down near her. She did not notice at first and continued to rock back and forth as she sobbed painfully. I prayed, asking God what to do.

Eventually, she noticed I was there and said, between her tears, “What do you want!?” The only thing I could say was, “God loves you.” She replied, “No, He doesn’t or He would not have let this happen!” After that she went back to crying and I felt to say nothing more.

God near us

I sat there for a long time until she started to quiet down.  Eventually, I felt it was ok to leave. The truth is that I wanted to take her in my arms and hold her, to comfort her in some way. Perhaps nowadays I might have the courage to do something like that, but back then I felt too self-conscious.

The truth is, while the young woman was crying out to God in pain, wondering where He was, He was sitting right next to her in me. God is always near us when we need Him.

Had she wanted to know anything about the Bible I probably could have answered her. Had she wanted to speak directly to Him He might have answered. If I had found the courage to do so, I would have held her just as Jesus wanted to do. I was  “God near us”, even though she felt He was a million miles away.  No one else  came near her all that time, but God did in me, because He cared and I was available.

Trust the Holy Spirit

Over the years I have learned to trust the Spirit of God more and be bolder when it comes to stepping out in faith under difficult circumstances.  Everyone has to start somewhere though, and even then I was beginning to yield to His Spirit.

Never underestimate the treasure that we have within our earthen vessels. Just as Jesus was Emanuel (God with us) we are now Emanuel because God is in us. The closest that many people ever come to God is when we stand next to them. Let us all open our hearts and allow God to do His will through us for those who are lost and hurting so that God can be near them when it really counts.

The Just Shall Not Live By Ambition Alone

Native Luo Fishing Boart In Uyoma Kenya B

Kenya is a funny place.  It seems that whatever is good is better and whatever is bad is worse.  Everything in East Africa seems to be amplified.  I have seen people act is ways that make me stand back in awe of their faith and I have seen others do things that make my soul sick and tremble.

Over literally thousands of years people have gone astray on the dark continent.  People in the west think that we know evil because of greed and lust, but due to our Christian roots we do no know the depths of depravity that exist in the souls of some who live in Sub Saharan Africa.

Christians either shine by faith or give in to sin in Africa.  If your heart is towards God and you are willing to trust Him you have to become better than most in order to survive.  True faith is born out of adversity because you must believe to eat.  For others, though, they cave into the overwhelming pressure to do whatever is necessary to get what they want.  Ambition replaces faith or is mixed with faith in a sort of a pseudo-believing that justifies anything.  I have learned, through harsh experience, that the most dangerous place to be in Africa is not in Nairobi at night but between an Africa and what they consider to be their destiny..

The difference between faith and ambition

There is a difference between faith and ambition.  Faith hears what God says, whether scripture or spoken, and believes it.  If God directs a person to do something by faith they do it.  If God directs a person to sit still and see the salvation of their God, they do that.  The point is that true faith is not self directed.

Ambition, on the other hand, is people deciding what they want and then taking action to get it.  Ambition, in Africa particularly, knows no bounds.  Some Christians get faith and ambition mixed up and think that doing whatever they feel is necessary counts as faith when in reality it is just them lying, cheating, and steeling their way up the ladder.  Just because you have stolen something that you decided God wanted to give you does not mean it is the provision of the Lord.  Just because you have deceived a friend or foe into doing something that results in you getting what you want does not mean it is the blessing of God.

Your means does not justify God’s ends

Once Christians start down the road of justifying the means they use because of what it achieves they have left the path of faith.  People become deceived by their own greed and justify greater and greater sin in order to get what they want.   Their can be an initial flush of prosperity from ambitious and dishonest action but the more they do such things the less true blessing, they kind the is permanent, occurs.  Finally, they become mere emissaries of the devil cheating and steeling for anything and everything they can find in order to get little or nothing.  Even the biggest despot still attends church regularly in East Africa.

In conclusion, true faith in God yields and does not push.  True faith allows God to direct us even if what He asks does not make a whole lot of sense to our natural minds.  True faith does not seek its own but trusts that God will take care of us if we do His will.  True faith never violates the law of love.
